Abstract:

The key objectives of the survey described in this report were to obtain best estimates of the numbers of overseas nationals employed in social care sector in the UK, and to explore qualitative aspects such as the skills overseas workers bring, their qualifications and training, and the experiences that employers have had of them. Telephone interviews were carried out with a number of social care employers, trade associations, professional bodies and other experts, and desk based research analysed both official statistics and previous literature. The report presents statistics on the size of the social care workforce, and looks at the characteristics of workers from overseas employed in social care, how they are being recruited, what qualifications these workers have, the extent to which these workers are trained for social care, the extent to which they are being prepared for life in the UK, the advantages and difficulties of employing migrant workers in social care, and the extent to which social care managers are equipped to manage migrant workers.
