Abstract: |
An increasing number of social work programmes offer students the opportunity to complete their practicum internationally. This paper describes and evaluates the formal and informal preparation of students for an international social work practicum. It is based on the evaluation of ‘The Displaced Persons Project: An EU-Canada Social Work Practicum Exchange’ from 2004 to 2009 that consisted of a practicum exchange involving 32 Canadian students and 32 EU students, and the exchange of 8 faculty members, from the 8 partner institutions. This paper forms part of the evaluation of this project. Data collection included a review of meeting notes, focus group discussions of participating coordinators, student exit interviews, and the review of feedback forms completed by students. Formal preparation included language classes, courses, and orientation sessions. Informal preparation included mentoring and linking students. The findings showed that, while students felt that completing an international practicum was a rich learning experience, good preparation is essential. Differences between the Canadian and European students' thoughts about the preparation they received are highlighted. The article concludes with discussing the implications for social work international field education. |
