Abstract:

School social work (SSW) is dominated by individual casework and small group interventions, despite the call by scholars for a shift towards systemic forms of practice such as school leadership, whole school prevention programming, and policy advocacy. To support these efforts, this article proposes a more thorough consideration of educational and sociological research that might inform practice-oriented SSW research and teaching. It discusses 2 bodies of research that provide necessary perspectives on efforts to support systematic SSW practice: the organisational characteristics of K-12 schools; and change processes in schools. These descriptions include specific discussion of cases and phenomena from the field of SSW. The article argues that for SSW practitioners to work systematically in schools, they must solidly understand key school organisational features, their organisationally constrained role, the kinds of interventions that promote and inhibit successful school, teacher and student change, and how they can contribute to positive outcomes throughout the school environment. The implications of applying broader empirical and theoretical perspectives to SSW research that inform social work education and practice are considered.
