Abstract: |
This article discusses the case of Edward, an African American male who grew up in predominately White communities and had limited exposure to other African Americans. His sociocultural orientation was marked by this experience, affecting his ability to hold positive regard for others of a similar racial background. This article explores how internalised racial oppression affected the psychosocial functioning of Edward, and how race and racial oppression became dominant themes in his treatment. The African American racial identity developmental stage model proposed by Cross in 1991 contextualizes aspects of Edward’s lived experiences. Attachment, relational, and self-psychological notions are used to ground the clinical processes. This article addresses the usefulness of an intersubjectively informed relationship involving Edward and an African American male therapist. It is hoped that this case provides a framework that will help practitioners understand that the effects of racial oppression can mar an individual’s self-concept. |
