Abstract:

While understanding an HIV-infected individual's sexual behaviours and routine sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) testing enables HIV prevention efforts, there is currently a lack of data for older individuals. This study, examining a cross-sectional cohort study of 541 HIV-infected individuals, 18 years and older, who completed an annual behavioural assessment, was developed to compare sexual behaviours and STD prevalence between older HIV-infected individuals and their younger counterparts. The authors investigated differences in sexual behaviours and STD prevalence between different age groups: 30% younger – 18 to 35 years; 46% middle-aged – 36 to 49 years; and 24% older – over 50. Findings indicated that older individuals were most likely to be male and Caucasian with longest time since HIV diagnosis, greatest receipt of highly active antiretroviral therapy, and highest rates of HIV. Reports of recent sexual activity decreased with age – younger (56%) vs. middle-aged (43%) vs. older (27%). The average number of recent sex partners was one, with a total range of 1 to 25, and 68% overall reported using condoms – these parameters did not differ by age group. STD prevalence was 8% (9 gonorrhoea, 7 chlamydia, and 20 syphilis) and was highest among younger individuals (11% younger, 7% middle-aged, and 3% older). Results demonstrated that with older age, sexual activity declines but inconsistent condom use remains commonly reported. Furthermore, STDs were identified among all age groups. In conclusion, these findings reinforce the need for secondary prevention efforts among all individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
