Abstract: |
This article describes family-based groupwork targeting the unmet needs of families residing in homeless shelters in the USA with regard to HIV/AIDS and alcohol and drug misuse. The HOPE Family Project (HIV Prevention for Parents and Early Adolescents) is based on other Center for Disease Control family- and evidence based-models, such as the Family Strengthening Curriculum and Partnership for the Homeless’ SISTA project. It was designed and implemented by an established community collaborative board and aims to educate and provide tailored support to children and young people aged 11-14 years, their parents and caregivers about preventive practice with regard to HIV/AIDS and substance misuse. The peer-delivered group component of the programme is key to building rapport among participants and maintaining cultural sensitivity, say these authors. Eight sessions address family communication: monitoring and supervision; self respect and peer pressure; puberty; HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections; substance misuse; domestic violence and the Hope Family Game which completes the programme. The authors focus upon challenges and limitations of group planning and evaluation of group success, for example with regard to recruitment and retention of participants. Success is claimed in terms of offering informal social support networks for homeless families, improving the functioning of families and mental health outcomes of young people within families. |
