Abstract:

Engaging residents in creative activities can provide stimulation and enhanced physical and cognitive abilities. This article examines how staff can set up recreation programmes for people with dementia. It specifically focuses on how creative arts tend to be construed as activities that have a tangible end product such as a piece of art, writing or prose, or items that have been made. However, music, dance and drama are also creative activities, whether they are carried out actively by a resident or simply enjoyed by participating in a passive way. The benefits of creative activities and how to help a resident participate in them are outlined in this article.
