Abstract: |
This paper examines the ethical challenges posed by factoring environmental outcomes into different levels of health and social care decision-making, including resource allocation and treatments. The report provides an overview of environmental ethics, including a discussion of the concept of sustainable development, and the key principles relevant to the development of an ethical framework for sustainable decision making in health and social care. The second section looks at the main themes in the ethics of climate change and the principles relevant for social justice. The final section considers the environmental and climate change ethics literature in conjunction with health and social care ethical principles in order to inform the development of a new sustainable health and social care ethical framework. It also briefly reports on the discussions of two expert seminars convened to help devise and review these principles, jointly hosted by SCIE, the King’s Fund and The Ethox Centre at the University of Oxford. |
