Progressing good relations and reconciliation in post-agreement Northern Ireland

Publisher:

Belfast: University of Ulster, 2012. 147p.

Abstract:

This paper explored how the priorities of good relations are currently understood by stakeholders with an interest – and influence on – promoting a shared and better future.  Semi-structured, in depth interviews was conducted with 31 key individuals from the political, civic, business and community sectors to identify the outstanding issues and key priority areas in terms of good relations and reconciliation.  The overall research objective is to make a practical contribution to future good relations policy and practice. The responses focused on what could broadly be framed as changes in the social and economic context of Northern Ireland, and the impact and influence of such changes on the development of good relations. These included the targeting of socio-economic disadvantage and differentials, greater collaborative working across and between sectors and agencies, and the significant economic support provided by external grant-makers over the past decades. The report concludes with a set of eight recommendations, based on an analysis of more recently published literature, policy documents, media coverage and observations. Each recommendation is broad and strategic in focus, highlighting the importance of building strong foundations over the next five years upon which more effective work will logically develop and progress.
