Abstract: |
Beliefs that are too rigid can often have unforeseen consequences, and because some don’t won’t to doubt the validity of their most important beliefs, they can be resistant to change. In fact, there are many situations in which people have retained their belief system despite evidence to the contrary, and instead of treating beliefs as opinions that can be modified they use beliefs as facts that limit their relationships and opportunities. This article first presents a short literature review on belief systems, which an emphasis on: containment and beliefs; the paranoid-schizoid position, the depressive position, and beliefs; and the psychoanalytic third and beliefs. Finally, three vignettes are included to illustrate how to use the analysis of beliefs to explore transference and promote self-determination. The vignettes demonstrate how to work with and, when appropriate, modify counterfactual beliefs within the transference domain. |
