Abstract:

This article draws on the author’s clinical work to explore some of the complex issues raised in body psychotherapy. Body psychotherapy is one modality used in a multi-modal approach to treating psychological trauma, particularly PTSD. However, it has traditionally been concerned with what happens in a single person. This article explores new trends in the field which place two or more bodies into the therapeutic setting. It examines a few of the issues surrounding embodiment and the world, and touches upon an embodied version of attachment in infants and social bonding in adults. It describes how relational body psychotherapy can discover the social in the personal. The article also explores themes on how body psychotherapy can contribute to conflict resolution and the pursuit of social justice, and the development of more “sane relationships” between human beings.
