Abstract: |
Previous studies have shown that care homes fail to address issues relating to purposeful activity. This deficit impacts on individuals’ psychological wellbeing and adversely affects overall health. The aim of this study was to explore the balance of occupation of care home residents. The study setting was a privately managed care home with 33 residents in a semi-rural area of Wales. Occupations were observed and recorded using a time-sampling frame over 12 hours on 3 consecutive days. Field notes were used to contextualise the data in reflecting the home environment. The findings showed that the majority of residents spent their time in the lounges and remained passive, interacting infrequently with staff and one another. Although the residents were physically cared for, the lack of engagement with staff was indicative of a broader malaise in which emotional, behavioural and cognitive needs were not addressed. The article concludes that older adults in residential care should be supported to engage in occupations. |
