Abstract:

This article reports on a content analysis of the social work research literature to assess the level of attention that the profession has paid to the issue of the rape of adults. Following a literature search and review of retrieved articles, 66 social work articles on rape in adulthood published in 1975-2008 were selected for inclusion in the study. Content analysis revealed that rape was a primary focus in about one third of the articles. However, 94% of the articles connected rape with another issue that was central to the profession, such as domestic violence or mental health. The majority of articles were client focused, rather than addressing practitioners' needs or macro-level issues. The article concludes that the overall low number of articles that were available for the study is an indication that the issue of adult rape has not been a priority for the profession. A large number of articles framed rape as a form of domestic violence, and there were a lack of articles focusing on the experiences of women who had been raped in other contexts. The dearth of articles on the subjects of screening, culturally competent responses, the impact on practitioners, and providing an ecological perspective to sexual violence and rape is discussed.
