Abstract: |
One of the key initiatives of the National Institute of Mental Health in England National Workforce Programme (NIMHE NWP) has been to explore the development and sustainability of the non-professionally qualified workforce. This paper looks at 2 particular roles: the support, time and recovery (STR) worker, whose role is to provide support for service users by giving them time with a focus on recovery, and the community development worker (CDW), whose role is to provide support for black and minority ethnic communities. The implementation of STR workers into the mental health workforce was supported by a Changing Workforce accelerated development programme which resulted in STR workers being placed into posts more smoothly and quickly than would have happened otherwise. Implementation of the CDW role has been much slower. The differences made at local and national level by the implementation of these roles, and the lessons learned, and outstanding issues to be resolved are discussed. The article concludes that the STR role is clearly embedded in the mental health workforce, but there is more work to do for CDWs who are unsure about their role and their future. |
