Title:

An exploratory study of befriending programs with refugees: the perspective of volunteer organizations.

Reference:

Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies, 5(3), 2007, pp.1-19.

Abstract:

A self-administered, semi-structured questionnaire is used in this study to elicit information about refugee befriending programmes from organisations in Canada (14), the USA (6), Australia (3) and England (2). In all countries befrienders tend to be female, with some 59% educated to college level, although organisations target a wide range of types of potential recruit. Challenges to recruitment and retention are discussed, with key factors affecting the latter including loss of the ability to offer help because of changes in health, employment, family and other circumstances. Loss of motivation is another key factor, which depends on a range of factors associated both with the organisation and the refugees to be befriended. The strategies used by organisations to keep volunteers committed are discussed, and some additional recommendations are offered.
