Abstract:

This quantitative research from the USA looked at whether sexual abuse experienced as a child (CSA) was uniquely associated with risky sexual behaviour (e.g. unprotected sex with multiple partners) as an adult, and whether there were addictive or interactive effects of different types of child maltreatment on this behaviour. Four hundred and fourteen women (average age 28 year, 82% black and minority ethnic people, 18% Caucasian) who had attended a publicly funded STD (sexually transmitted diseases/infections) clinic were surveyed about sexual, physical, psychological and emotional abuse and whether they were neglected as children. After analysis, all of these types of abuse and neglect were shown to be associated with adult sexual risk behaviour. But, after controlling for other forms of child maltreatment, multivariate analyses revealed only CSA was uniquely linked to adult sexual risk behaviour, and the authors claim it, alone, to be the best predictor of such behaviour. The authors call for sexual risk reduction interventions, especially for women who were sexually abused in childhood. Continued and further research on the effects of different types of maltreatment on adult sexual risk behaviour is also recommended by these authors.
