Abstract:

Despite the high incidence of violence in long-term care facilities (LTCs), nurse aides (NAs) receive little or no training to work with resident behaviours. The aim of this research was to evaluate an individualised internet training designed to teach NAs strategies to prevent or, if necessary, react to resident aggression in ways that are safe for the resident as well as the caregiver. The NA training programme is a behaviourally focused and video-based training that includes content on skills for safely dealing with physical aggression. A total of 158 NAs were recruited and randomised into treatment and control groups. The treatment subjects were asked to visit the intervention programme twice, approximately 1 week apart. Assessments were made at baseline, approximately 2 weeks after the intervention, and 1 month later. Measures included video situation testing and assessment of psychosocial constructs associated with behaviour change. The training was well received by participants. The findings showed positive results for knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and empathy, with the effects maintained after 2 months. The article concludes that internet training is a viable approach to shape appropriate NA reactions to aggressive resident behaviours.
