Abstract: |
The criminal justice system is not designed to effectively respond to sexual assault victims; few adult sexual assault cases are ever reported to police and far fewer make it all the way to adjudication. The aim of this study was to examine barriers to criminal justice responses to adult female sexual assault cases as viewed through the eyes of rape crisis centre advocates. The role of the advocate is to assist the victim as they navigate through the criminal justice system, and thus advocates have a potentially useful perspective from which to understand how survivors experience the criminal justice system. Graduate student research teams conducted semistructured interviews with 14 rape crisis advocates from 10 crisis centres across a Northeastern state. Analysis of the transcripts revealed 2 overarching themes: ‘we’ve come a long way but it’s still hideous’; and ‘sheer determination’. The findings raise key points that might help in the development of new procedures and processes for how adult sexual assault cases are handled in the justice system. |
