Abstract:

A sample of 187 adolescents aged 12-19 with depression were allocated to a new computerised cognitive behavioural therapy intervention SPARX (94) and to treatment as usual (93). The SPARX intervention comprised of seven modules delivered over a period of between four and seven weeks. Treatment as usual was primarily face to face counselling delivered by trained counsellors and clinical psychologists. The primary outcome was the change in score on the children’s depression rating scale-revised.

Post-intervention, there was a mean reduction of 10.32 in SPARX and 7.59 in treatment as usual in raw scores on the children’s depression rating scale-revised. Remission rates were significantly higher in the SPARX arm than in the treatment as usual arm and response rates did not differ significantly. Computerised cognitive behavioural therapy was at least as effective as treatment as usual in reducing depressive symptoms in adolescents.
