Abstract:

Noting that mental health stigma and racial prejudice are two of the biggest barriers to social inclusion, this article examines the current state of black and minority ethnic service user involvement in mental health policy making and commissioning of services. It provides an overview of the Dancing to Our Own Tunes report (2008) on black and minority ethnic user involvement in mental health and the follow-up review (2011) on progress towards achieving improved service user involvement. It discusses barriers to participation and potential strategies to enhance black and minority ethnic user involvement and ensure more culturally sensitive services, commenting that there is a lack of representation on groups that influence mental health policy commissioning and that spending cuts disproportionately impact on black and minority ethnic mental health service users. The author concludes that increasing the involvement of diverse service users in policy-making and in the design and delivery of mental health services will lead to better quality, more efficient and effective services.
