Abstract: |
Previous research in the area of crisis intervention has concentrated on the prevention of out-of-home placement of children, or on family functioning. However, they have largely neglected the aspect of crisis. This study investigated crisis in families receiving Family Crisis Intervention (FCI) in the Netherlands. It addresses crisis characteristics and crisis change. Children and parents from 183 families were surveyed about their definition and experience of crisis and their need for help. Findings indicated that nearly all families were in crisis at the beginning of the intervention, although the perception and extent of crisis differed among participants. Overall, crisis decreased from baseline to follow-up according to both clients and crisis intervention workers, but had not completely disappeared after the intervention. This finding challenges the validity of the assumed 4-6 week time span of a crisis period. Differences in perception of crisis, clients' need for help, and possible crisis patterns are discussed. Implications for practical family crisis intervention are presented. |
