Abstract:

Natural mentoring relationships (NMRs) may act as a protective factor that promotes and protects the health and well-being of at-risk and marginalised youth. NMRs are supportive, nurturing dyads formed with a family member or with another member of the youth’s social network. The aim of this study was to learn from same-sex attracted (SSA) youth about the presence, form, and function of NMRs in their lives. In-depth interviews were held with 39 self-identified gay, bisexual, and questioning male youth aged 15 to 22 years. Analysis of the findings revealed 2 overarching themes: NMR diversity; and provision of social support. The participants identified a diverse range of natural mentors including professionals, such as teachers or coachers, and others, including siblings, romantic partners and peers. The provision of social support was of thematic prominence in these relationships, with the NMR providing emotional, informational, self-appraisal, and unconditional support. Clinical and programming implications, as well as directions for future work are discussed.
