Abstract: |
Hoisting people has become a more acceptable occurrence within health-care establishments. Although this has helped to significantly decrease musculoskeletal injury risk factors, a number of injuries to both staff and patients are still reported. Staff should practice the correct principles of safe hoisting to reduce stress on their joints and muscles. This article provides guidance for the safe use of hoists and slings to instruct correct practice, reduce the incidence of injury to the health worker, and comply with laws and regulations. The article describes: legislation; selecting appropriate equipment; maintenance of equipment; staff training; principles, posture and positioning; practical tips for the use of the hoist or sling; and documentation. Any adverse incident or near miss event related to the use of patient hoist must be reported to an appointed person in charge. |
