Abstract:

Foster children manifest a high incidence of externalising behaviour disorders. The provision of training for foster parents may therefore be needed to help in the reduction of externalising behaviour disorders in foster children, increase placement stability, and reduce foster parents' emotional distress. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a short enhanced cognitive–behavioural group parenting programme, enhanced with a module focused on teaching foster parents emotion-regulation strategies, delivered to Romanian foster parents. The study compared 56 foster parents who were allocated to the Short Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Parent Training intervention with 41 foster parents who were allocated to the control group. The programme consisted of 4 weekly sessions plus a 3-month follow-up session, each of 4 hours. Foster parents and children were assessed at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and at 3-months follow-up. The results supported the efficacy of the programme in treating child behaviour problems and reducing parental emotional distress. However, no differences were found regarding placement stability between the 2 groups. Implications of the findings are discussed in terms of designing and delivering viable parent interventions aimed at reducing externalising disorders in foster children and unplanned placement disruptions.
