Abstract: |
The number of non-English-speaking households in the US is increasing. In the context of legislation which stipulates that public school students must achieve specified academic standards or school districts will incur sanctions, some districts are considering eliminating release time, a programme which allows students to be excused from regular academic schedules to receive spiritual instruction. This study aimed to determine whether English learners participating in release time record lower academic test scores than their nonparticipating peers. It was undertaken in a large school district in California and involved analysis of data about school pupils and their academic ability. The study found that some 13% of students classified as English learners participated in release time of approximately one hour of spiritual instruction each week, and that release time participants scored at least as well as their peers on the state tests used to assess and listening and speaking, reading, writing and overall English proficiency. The article discusses potential reasons for the results. |
