Abstract:

Individuals who are homeless have been found to be at particularly high risk for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Training in suicide prevention should therefore be included in the professional development of social workers and other homeless service professionals. This study assessed the characteristics and educational needs of homeless service providers who attended a suicide prevention training programme. Specifically, the study explored whether the homeless service provides had any previous experience with or exposure to suicidal individuals. A total of 51 participants completed questionnaires before and immediately after attending the brief standardised gatekeeper suicide prevention training programme. The results indicated that 90% of the attendees had past contact with suicidal individuals, and 95% were willing to participate in continuing education on suicide prevention. The article concludes that, given the high levels of exposure, suicide prevention training is essential to support the capacity of homeless service providers to address suicidal behaviours in the lives of their clients.
