Abstract:

The Touch n’ Tag application was designed for visually impaired people to help them in object identification and thus help them to live more independently. Touch n’ Tag is a voice tagging application developed for mobile phones using near field communication (NFC) technology. The user can touch a tag attached to a physical object with their phone and then record or play back voice annotations associated with the tag. The goal of this study was to evaluate the emerging use cases of the application as well as its usefulness and usability in real life settings. A qualitative field trial was conducted with 10 visually impaired or blind users ranging in age from 35 to 80 years. The participants used the application for 2 weeks as a tool in their everyday lives. They were interviewed at 2 points during the trial: at the beginning when they were introduced to the device; and at the end to find out about their use of the technology. In addition, the audio and use log files were analysed after the trial period. The findings indicate that the users learned to use the application easily and found it easy and robust to use. Most responded positively towards the idea of tagging items with their own voice messages. The most common targets for tagging were food items. However, some users had difficulties in integrating the solution with their everyday practices.
