Abstract: |
This study investigated the association between maternal depression and parenting practices, and again at 36-month follow-up. Participants, drawn from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being who were also referred to Child Protective Services (CPS), included 1,536 mother-child dyads in which the child was age three to 10 years and remained in the home after a CPS investigation. Three hypotheses were tested: depressed mothers were more likely to demonstrate harsh parenting than are non-depressed mothers; depressed mothers were more likely to demonstrate neglectful parenting than are non-depressed mothers; and depressed mothers are more likely to demonstrate emotional maltreatment than were non-depressed mothers. Findings revealed that depression remained high over the study period and was associated with increased risk of emotional maltreatment and neglect. In addition, self-reported emotional maltreatment remained high across time points. The authors highlight the need for better identification of mental health needs for mothers entering the child welfare system, in conjunction with parent training focused on positive parenting. |
