Abstract:

Written with the non-lawyer in mind, this book provides a practical and accessible guide to the legal framework that social workers need. It covers the law as applied to children, families and vulnerable adults, paying particular attention to the key areas of: the dynamic relationship between the law and social work practice; the crucial role of anti-discriminatory practice; and the continued growth in the importance of the Human Rights Act, 1998. The book is dived into three sections. The first looks at the legal context of social work practice including: an introduction to law and social work practice; sources of law; courts and law officers; social workers' role in the law; the Human Rights Act 1998 and social work practice; and discrimination. The second section covers children and families: supporting children and families; children and family breakdown; child protection; looked after children; adoption; education; and youth justice. The final part of the book discusses vulnerable adults covering: community care; mental health; mental capacity; adult protection; criminal justice; welfare and homelessness; and asylum.
