Abstract:

Running away from residential care setting is common among children and young people. This severely limits the effectiveness of mental health care services. This paper describes the development and implementation of a decision support model for predicting discharge due to running away on the basis of attendee’s individual characteristics. Participants included 667 wards of a large Midwestern state between the ages of 7 and 20 who were placed in residential treatment and discharged during 2007. The model contained several predictors, including: school attendance; history of running away; runaway ideation; age; substance abuse; and delinquency. Findings revealed that the model demonstrated good internal validity and moderate predictive power for discharge due to running away. The authors concluded that the results could support mental health care workers in identifying potential recipients of interventions to reduce the likelihood of early exits from residential care the target group.
