Abstract: |
Noting that it is well established that substance use and misuse represents a major public health burden, this report summarises, for a non-medical audience, the latest scientific evidence about the health related harms of emerging and established licit and illicit drugs. It provides an update to Dangerousness of Drugs: a Guide to the Risks and Harms Associated with Substance Misuse, and focuses on drugs commonly used in the UK. It discusses health harms of drugs, including the need to consider health harms within the culture and context of drug use among specific populations, and looks at patterns of substance use, dependence, substance related deaths, and the economic costs of substance use. It includes tables setting out the acute and chronic adverse effects associated with each substance and factors that mediate or moderate risk. Evidence on specific harms associated with different contextual factors related to drug use are included in the tables for each specific drug. Additional tables include information about crosscutting themes across the included substances (adulterants in illicit drugs, age-related factors, gender related factors, route of administration, and polysubstance use). A glossary of terms is also included. |
