Abstract:

Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death among children and young people aged 1–14. This publication is 1 of 3 pieces of NICE guidance on how to prevent unintentional injuries among children and young people aged under 15. This guidance focuses on road design and modification. The other 2 focus on: strategies, regulation, enforcement, surveillance and workforce development; and the provision of home safety equipment and home risk assessments. When writing the recommendations, the Programme Development Group considered the evidence of effectiveness (including cost effectiveness), expert testimony, fieldwork data and comments from stakeholders. The 4 recommendations relate to: health advocacy and engagement; needs assessment and planning; measures to reduce speed; and popular routes. It should be of interest to local highway authorities, local strategic partnerships, health professionals, and school travel planners.
