Abstract: |
South Asian women (women from Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi backgrounds) involved in the work of civic organisations set up to work with South Asian women service users were interviewed for the research study described and discussed in this article. 21 in-depth semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed. The article draws on developments in feminist theory and discusses South Asian women and agency, identity, the boundaries of political activism and agency, power and empowerment, with examples from the interviews. It discusses the empowerment of women with reference to its central role in enabling them to take control over their lives. It argues that, despite "the perceived invisibility" of South Asian women in civil society in the United Kingdom, they have been and continue to be politically active, particularly through civic organisations created for women by women. |
