Abstract: |
Young people returning to school from the justice system have a range of challenges in reintegrating into school communities. This article explores the literature on young people involved in the juvenile justice system in the United States, including the number of young people affected, academic characteristics, and issues the adolescents and their families face. It includes a summary of the responsibilities of the education, justice, and family systems affecting young people, identifying gaps and possible solutions. It discusses the potential role for school social workers as a resource for young people returning from the justice system and their families, arguing that they are well-positioned to have a vital role in the readmission and re-entry process for these young people. |
