Abstract:

Masculine characteristics have become synonymous with unacceptable behaviour and violence. It is often difficult for a man coming to therapy to express his subjective experience of masculinity. This article argues that men must be able to explore all their feelings in therapy without being judged if they are to move towards positive change. It calls for practitioners to rise above gender bias and to provide a masculine place of healing where aggression and frustration, but also vulnerability, sadness and joy, can be voiced and heard without judgement. Two extreme forms of masculinity are discussed; machismo males who demonstrate aggressive male behaviour born out of defensiveness, and naïve males who are usually gentle, sensitive, dedicated to their work and their partners, yet still profoundly unhappy. The article concludes by asking whether there is a need to put aside such biased views and prejudice against masculinity and meet masculinity more directly.
