Abstract:

The opinions of service users and patients are a useful source of information. A patient experience programme at Oxleas Foundation Trust in south east London has developed a methodology to measure qualitative and quantitative aspects of service users and carer experience in mental health and community mental health services within the Trust. Trained volunteers administered a questionnaire during one-to-one interviews with service users and carers in a mental health rehabilitation unit. Key themes were then extracted. The programme had a higher than average response rate and changes were made in the Trust as a direct result. Volunteers also gained personal benefits from being involved in the project, such as increased self-confidence.
