Abstract: |
Canadian census trends indicate that mixed relationships increased 33% between 2001 and 2006. Yet social work practice with mixed-race individuals is a largely overlooked area in Canadian social work education. This article, using British, American and Canadian scholarship and research, discusses new directions for social work practice with people of mixed-race heritage within a critical mixed-race framework of practice. Informed by first person narratives and recent studies, areas of particular importance are self-definition, invisibility, Canadian multicultural policy, gender, and family. Strategies for social work practice are outlined including supporting self-identification, validating complex experiences of racism and passing a social justice informed analysis of critical reflection for practitioners. Implications for potential future research in this area are discussed. |
