Abstract:

In this article, the author reflects on what a research-minded culture in a welfare organisation would look like, why such a culture is important, and how it could be promoted. Asserting that there is a deficit in research capacity within social work both in research produced and how it is used by social workers, the article discusses the relationship between research and social work. The author looks at 3 models for developing the use of knowledge within social work: the research-based practitioner (where it is the individual's responsibility to ensure they are aware of research and use the findings to inform practice), the embedded research model (which seeks to embed research in the systems and processes of the organisation and where policy makers and managers have responsibility for ensuring research is reflected), and the organisational excellence model (which highlights the importance of organisational leadership and management for delivery of successful inclusion of research within practice). The article discusses the concept of the learning organisation, evidence-based practice and service user involvement, and presents a vision of a research minded organisation
