Abstract: |
Research shows that the nonmedical use of prescription stimulants among college students has increasingly become a concern over the last decade, surpassing the abuse of other drugs on college campuses. This misuse places students at risk for physiological, psychological and legal harm. Students use stimulant medications for nonmedical reasons including staying awake to study, staying awake to socialise, increasing energy, and losing weight. This paper reviews the current literature and discusses the implications for developing effective programmes that may be implemented on university campuses to address this growing problem. Focus is given to students most at risk of abusing nonmedical stimulant medications, and the physical, psychological and legal harm that students who abuse these medications may face. An examination of southeastern colleges with the highest occurrence of prescription abuse is also included. |
