Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to discuss youth justice personnel training and education and the recommendations about it made in Time for a Fresh Start, the report of the Independent Commission on Youth Crime and Antisocial Behaviour in England and Wales. The author argues that although there is lack of detail in the Commission's recommendations about youth justice personnel professional training and education, it has made an important intervention by suggesting that youth justice training and education should be specialist and provide personnel with a high-level understanding about children and young people. The article covers mapping and assessing the training of youth justice personnel, including secure estate personnel and other people employed within the youth justice sector such as those working in youth offending teams, and youth justice training and qualifications. It discusses what specialist training means in the context of youth justice, and polarisation in youth justice education between vocational education (emphasising acquisition of skills and competencies) and more traditional academic education (such as undergraduate degrees in youth justice or criminology).
