Abstract:

Parenting during adolescence is often followed by a range of untoward outcomes for young parents and their children. Youth in foster care are at greater risk for early pregnancy and parenting. The aim of this review was to synthesis key findings and recommendations relating to prevalence of, and risk and protective factors related to, adolescent pregnancy or parenting among youth in foster care. A literature search aimed to identify studies published from 1989 to 2010 focusing on pregnancy and parenting in the foster care population in the United States. A total of 16 studies were selected for review. These studies are diverse in their methodologies, but common themes emerge across their findings. Foster youth have inconsistent relationships with adults, experience less stability in their living arrangements, have a history of trauma, and have on the whole less access to prevention messages than their peers outside of foster care. These barriers place foster youth at increased risk of becoming parents at an early age. There is a lack of policy and practice guidance for child welfare workers related to pregnancy prevention and reproductive healthcare for youth in foster care.
