Abstract: |
School social workers usually serve as the primary mental health providers to youths with mental health problems. School social workers practice at multiple levels of the ecological system, engaging in tasks and interventions with the child, family, teacher, school and community. As well as the school social worker, a number of students also receive outside counselling services. This study aimed to investigate whether school social workers who work with students who receive outside counselling spend more of their practice time engaging in other levels of the ecological system, aside from the child-centred approach. The study used data from respondents from the 2008 National School Social Work Survey who worked primarily with students with either emotional or behavioural problems. The analysis examined whether the practice approaches differed between the 101 school social workers for whom all or most of their students received outside counselling and the 182 school social workers for whom few of their students received these services. The results demonstrate that the groups were different with respect to practice choices, as school social workers who worked with students receiving outside counselling reported greater engagement at all levels of the ecological system except for the school domain and the practice approach of group counselling. Both groups cited work with teachers as the least used aspect of school social work practice. |
