Abstract:

Interventions for the separated and divorced commonly address adjustments to the emotional, social and financial consequences of divorce, and include divorce groups, support groups, conciliation courts counselling, and mandatory divorce education. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of interventions designed to help adults through the process of separation or divorce. Specifically, the meta-analysis investigates the nature of these programmes and their influence on reduction of divorce-related symptoms. Following an extensive literature search, 20 studies were selected for inclusion in the analysis. The results on study characteristics and effect sizes as well as standards for presenting results in primary studies are discussed. Measures of divorce adjustment included measures of self-worth, emotional disentanglement, anger, grief, and adjustment to the end of the relationship. The findings show that divorce interventions are helpful in alleviating the negative psychological consequences of divorce. Studies with an educational approach appeared to have a larger effect size. The limitations of the current research and suggestions for future research are provided.
