Abstract: |
Studies have shown that many psychiatrists have been assaulted and/or threatened while at work. This study, carried out in a mental health trust in south London, aimed to measure the frequency of physical and/verbal assaults on psychiatric trainees and their reactions. It used a specially developed questionnaire to gather information (about assaults, the consequences, and any impact on the way respondents undertook clinical duties) from trainees attending a teaching day and an annual meeting. 108 completed questionnaires were analysed. The study found that 41% of trainees who responded had been physically assaulted at least once, and 89% had been verbally assaulted. As a result of assaults, 34% of trainees reported being more risk aware and 11% reported being hesitant to assess patients with a history of violence. The authors conclude that the study showed unacceptable levels of physical and verbal assault on psychiatric trainees. |
