Abstract: |
Exploring the career of Sophonisba Preston Breckenridge (1866-1948), a pioneering social work educator and a key figure in the professionalisation of social work in the United States, this article aims to suggest how contemporary female social workers can reclaim their historic leadership role in the profession. It describes Breckinridge's personal life, professional career and political connections, noting how personal and professional relationships with other women helped Breckinridge and her female colleagues and students to assume leadership positions in social work education and policy making. The author contends that the example of Breckinridge's feminist activism and female leadership can help contemporary women social workers to recapture a leadership role by reinvigorating a reform minded and social justice-oriented tradition and reviving a legacy of female mentorship and feminist collaboration. |
