Abstract: |
Many poorer people pay more for everyday essentials such as energy, food and transport. As the cost of these everyday essentials continues to rise and household incomes fall, the results can be devastating for many households, including families, older people and people who are unemployed. The aim of this report, and the related programme of work by the Consumer Council, is to alleviate the impact of poverty and give consumers a fairer deal. To shape the report, approximately 50 organisations from the private, public and voluntary and community sectors met in December 2010 to discuss the key issues and help identify a set of recommendations. The result highlights 5 key areas of concern. Each section of this report highlight the problem and outline key actions needed in order to make a practical difference to the everyday lives of people on low incomes. These 5 key areas are: financial exclusion; transport; fuel poverty; shoppers’ rights and responsibilities; and the cost of complaining. A full list of recommendations is included at the end of each section. |
