What's that noise?: a profile of personal and professional experience of tinnitus in NI

Publisher:

Belfast: Royal National Institute for Deaf People, 2010. 55p.

Abstract:

The aim of this research was to gain a better understanding of people’s experience of living with tinnitus in Northern Ireland and to gain an overview of statutory and voluntary sector service provision. Structured interviews were used to collect data from 20 individuals with tinnitus. In addition, questionnaires completed by 174 GPs, 10 heads of audiology, 10 ENT consultants and 5 team leaders in sensory supports in HSC Trusts were used to collect data about the support and services provided for people with tinnitus. The individuals’ experiences with tinnitus are discussed under a number of different themes including: their description of tinnitus; their reaction to first hearing tinnitus noise; the cause of their tinnitus; factors that trigger tinnitus; the impact of tinnitus on their lives; and support from GPs, audiologists, ENT consultants, Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts, and tinnitus support groups. The experiences of the 4 different groups of professionals are discussed separately. This includes their knowledge of tinnitus, the action they take when presented with an individual with tinnitus, and their need for training. Key findings and recommendations are provided for each group of professionals. The research indicates that HSC professionals are aware that they need to improve their knowledge and understanding of tinnitus, and many are keen to undertake further training.
