Abstract: |
This article explores the impact of intimate relationships on housing stability and homelessness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 61 employed people who were experiencing homelessness in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A particular aim of the interviews was to document the participants’ perceptions of their individual pathways to and from homelessness. Analysis of the transcripts revealed 3 themes which described the intersection between respondents’ intimate relationships and their situation of homelessness: relationship breakdown; the role and impact of having intimate partners during a period of homelessness; and the nature of the intimate relationship and its impact on housing. The data suggest that aspects of intimate relationships should be considered by social service agencies when addressing a person's situation of homelessness. |
