Publisher:

London: National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2010. 96p., bibliog.

Abstract:

Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death among children and young people aged 1–14. This publication is 1 of 3 pieces of NICE guidance on how to prevent unintentional injuries among children and young people aged under 15. This guidance focuses on strategies, regulation, enforcement, surveillance and workforce development in relation to preventing unintentional injuries in the home, on the road and during outdoor play and leisure. The other 2 focus on: the provision of home safety equipment and home risk assessments; and road design and modification. When writing the recommendations, the Programme Development Group considered the evidence of effectiveness (including cost effectiveness), expert testimony, fieldwork data and comments from stakeholders. The 21 recommendations are divided into 6 categories: general; workforce training and capacity building; injury surveillance; home safety; outdoor play and leisure; and road safety. It should be of interest to a wide range of stakeholders involved directly and indirectly with preventing unintentional injuries among children and young people, including commissioners and providers of health services, local authority children’s services, and local authorities and their strategic partnerships.
