Abstract: |
The expansion of the European Union in 2004 extended rights to live and work in other EU member states to nationals of the Accession 8 (A8) countries (Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic). Consequently, many Central and Eastern European migrants entered the UK to take up paid work, often living in urban areas. This article draws on data from a study undertaken in a northern English city to explore the ways in which established communities experience and make sense of the local impact of new migration within their neighbourhoods. The study gathered information from 89 A8 migrants and community members through focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The article discusses the study findings, including the impact on jobs and housing and elements of citizen engagement (A8 migrants showed proactive citizen engagement to enhance their interests while members of established host communities showed defensive engagement to protect against what they perceived to be a threat to their rights to local jobs and housing). The authors report that the belief that newly arrived migrants are in competition with established communities for finite local jobs and welfare resources is central to the expressed concerns of established communities about the potential for A8 migration to have localised negative impact. |
